Attic Insulation Top-Up
An attic insulation top-up builds a new layer of loose fill over the old one, bringing a shallow attic floor up to R-60.
How a top-up worksAttic air sealing plugs the small openings where heated room air escapes upward through the ceiling, and it opens every job we take on.
Insulation slows heat that passes through it, but air in motion slides straight through loose fill. Sealing stops that air at the ceiling so the layer above can do its job.
The biggest leaks get the most attention. Recessed lights are boxed with covers, plumbing stacks receive rubber collars, wire holes are foamed and each interior wall plate gets a bead of caulk.
The hatch is weatherstripped and fitted with a rigid, insulated lid. Chimney chases are closed with sheet metal and high-temperature sealant, never with foam.
In a long stretch of hard cold, damp air that leaks into the attic freezes onto roofing nails and sheathing. A mild spell melts it, and the water drips onto the drywall below. Closing the ceiling keeps that moisture out of the attic in the first place.
It helps with roof ice as well. Less heat in the attic means less snow melting on the roof, which is central to ice dam prevention.
Older homes lose far more air through the attic than newer ones, since balloon-framed walls, cracked plaster and old chimneys all add openings. Sealing them takes longer. The added steps are described on the century home attic insulation page.
As a stand-alone job, attic air sealing generally falls between $0.60 and $1.40 for each square foot of attic, or about $600 to $1,600 on an average house, and it is listed separately on the estimate.
Phone (289) 210-8354 to book a free inspection, and ask us to price attic air sealing along with it. The Caledon attic insulation home page shows our other work.
Booking two of these on the same day spares you a second round of setup.

How a top-up works
Blown-in cellulose insulation lays one continuous blanket across the attic floor and reaches into every corner, in new and old houses alike.
How cellulose is blown in
Century home attic insulation starts with a longer inspection, because a house past its hundredth birthday hides problems a newer home never has.
Details for older homes
Attic insulation removal clears away fill that is soaked, mouldy, flattened or fouled by mice, squirrels or raccoons, leaving a clean attic ready for sealing and new material.
How old fill is removed
Ice dam prevention is most effective from inside the attic, where the goal is a roof deck too cold to melt the snow sitting on it.
How ice dams are stopped
Cathedral ceiling insulation goes into the thin space above an angled ceiling, where there is no open attic floor to work from.
Options for sloped ceilings
Ontario's attic insulation rebate is one stream of Home Renovation Savings, a program Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas run together, and it refunds a share of the bill once an attic reaches R-50 or more.
Rebate routes and amounts
Attic insulation cost comes down to four things: attic floor area, the depth already there, the material chosen and whether old insulation must come out first.
