Blown-In Cellulose Insulation
Blown-in cellulose insulation lays one continuous blanket across the attic floor and reaches into every corner, in new and old houses alike.
How cellulose is blown inAn attic insulation top-up builds a new layer of loose fill over the old one, bringing a shallow attic floor up to R-60.
If the old fill is dry and clean, this is the quickest route to a warmer second floor. Most Caledon attics we inspect hold six to ten inches of aging fiberglass or cellulose, about R-20 to R-30, which is half of today's target. Nothing is taken out, and the new depth sits right on top.
An attic insulation top-up suits any attic where the old layer is dry, free of droppings and not vermiculite. Should any of those fail, the old material is cleared first under attic insulation removal.
Cold bedrooms, a furnace that seldom rests, patchy snow melt on the roof and joist tops poking above the old fill all suggest the attic needs more depth.
Leaks are sealed before the new depth goes down, because 17 inches of loose fill makes pot lights and pipe holes very hard to reach later.
That is why each estimate for this job carries a separate line for attic air sealing. We also staple baffles along the eaves, keeping the deeper fill clear of the soffit vents.
Before the hose starts, depth gauges are fixed to the framing at several points, each marked at the target depth for the product being blown.
At the end of the attic insulation top-up, every gauge shows that mark or more. You can see the gauges for yourself, and the finished R-value is printed on your invoice.
Across Ontario, an attic insulation top-up is usually priced between $1.30 and $2.60 for each square foot of attic. A 1,200-square-foot attic therefore falls near $1,560 to $3,120, and sealing is quoted on its own line.
Where your price lands depends on the depth you have now and how hard the hatch is to reach. Compare every job on the attic insulation cost page.

Booking two of these on the same day spares you a second round of setup.

How cellulose is blown in
Century home attic insulation starts with a longer inspection, because a house past its hundredth birthday hides problems a newer home never has.
Details for older homes
Attic insulation removal clears away fill that is soaked, mouldy, flattened or fouled by mice, squirrels or raccoons, leaving a clean attic ready for sealing and new material.
How old fill is removed
Attic air sealing plugs the small openings where heated room air escapes upward through the ceiling, and it opens every job we take on.
Where the leaks get sealed
Ice dam prevention is most effective from inside the attic, where the goal is a roof deck too cold to melt the snow sitting on it.
How ice dams are stopped
Cathedral ceiling insulation goes into the thin space above an angled ceiling, where there is no open attic floor to work from.
Options for sloped ceilings
Ontario's attic insulation rebate is one stream of Home Renovation Savings, a program Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas run together, and it refunds a share of the bill once an attic reaches R-50 or more.
Rebate routes and amounts
Attic insulation cost comes down to four things: attic floor area, the depth already there, the material chosen and whether old insulation must come out first.
