Attic Insulation Top-Up
An attic insulation top-up builds a new layer of loose fill over the old one, bringing a shallow attic floor up to R-60.
How a top-up worksIce dam prevention is most effective from inside the attic, where the goal is a roof deck too cold to melt the snow sitting on it.
An ice dam starts with house heat warming the upper slope. Meltwater runs toward the overhang, which hangs out past the wall in the cold, and freezes there into a ridge that traps more water behind it and pushes it under the shingles.
Ice dam prevention inside the attic comes down to three steps in a set order. Step one is attic air sealing, which keeps warm air off the roof boards.
Step two adds insulation depth, holding heat in the rooms below. Step three places a baffle at each eave, which lets outdoor air enter at the soffits and sweep under the roof deck. Done together, they keep the entire roof near the outdoor temperature.
Roughly four and a half feet of snow falls on Caledon in an average winter, and the higher ground to the north and west often collects more. Heavy snow on a warm roof is how ice dams grow, so this work pays off in Caledon.
Roof cables and snow raking can keep a channel open, yet neither touches the heat loss behind the ice. Working from the attic fixes the cause and lowers the heating bill as a bonus.
If meltwater has already wet the fill near the eaves, that strip is pulled out and replaced as part of the work.
Ice dam prevention is priced as a bundle of sealing, insulation and baffles. On a 1,200-square-foot attic it typically runs $2,300 to $4,800, depending on the depth already in place.
Phone (289) 210-8354 and we will inspect the attic and write up an ice dam prevention plan for your roof. See the Caledon attic insulation home page for our other services.
Booking two of these on the same day spares you a second round of setup.

How a top-up works
Blown-in cellulose insulation lays one continuous blanket across the attic floor and reaches into every corner, in new and old houses alike.
How cellulose is blown in
Century home attic insulation starts with a longer inspection, because a house past its hundredth birthday hides problems a newer home never has.
Details for older homes
Attic insulation removal clears away fill that is soaked, mouldy, flattened or fouled by mice, squirrels or raccoons, leaving a clean attic ready for sealing and new material.
How old fill is removed
Attic air sealing plugs the small openings where heated room air escapes upward through the ceiling, and it opens every job we take on.
Where the leaks get sealed
Cathedral ceiling insulation goes into the thin space above an angled ceiling, where there is no open attic floor to work from.
Options for sloped ceilings
Ontario's attic insulation rebate is one stream of Home Renovation Savings, a program Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas run together, and it refunds a share of the bill once an attic reaches R-50 or more.
Rebate routes and amounts
Attic insulation cost comes down to four things: attic floor area, the depth already there, the material chosen and whether old insulation must come out first.
