Attic Insulation Top-Up
An attic insulation top-up builds a new layer of loose fill over the old one, bringing a shallow attic floor up to R-60.
How a top-up worksBlown-in cellulose insulation lays one continuous blanket across the attic floor and reaches into every corner, in new and old houses alike.
The material is recycled newspaper fibre with a borate treatment that helps it shrug off flame, mould and bugs. Because it packs more weight into each cubic foot, it slows air drifting through the layer better than loose fiberglass does.
Loose cellulose flows around wires, bracing, pipes and bent joists, all spots where batts leave gaps. Caledon farmhouses often have rough-sawn joists set at uneven spacing, so batts seldom sit snugly.
Loose fill also buries the joists themselves. Lumber carries heat roughly four times faster than cellulose does, so burying them under loose fill keeps them from showing up as cold stripes across the ceiling.
Cellulose sinks a little during its first year, which is why every bag chart shows two depths for each R-value, one at install and one after settling.
We blow to the installed figure, so the attic still measures R-60 after it settles. With most cellulose products that means about 17 to 19 inches.
Prep work happens before the hose goes up. We seal the air leaks, staple baffles at each eave and frame a short wall around the hatch opening so the fill stays put. Chimneys and metal flues keep the clearance they need.
Old wiring or vermiculite is handled before anything else. How older attics get ready is explained on the century home attic insulation page.
Expect blown-in cellulose insulation over a thin or bare attic floor to cost between $1.50 and $2.80 a square foot in Ontario, or around $1,800 to $3,360 for 1,200 square feet before air sealing is added.
Phone (289) 210-8354 and ask for a free inspection and a blown-in cellulose insulation price on paper. Head to the Caledon Attic Insulation home page for everything else we install.
Booking two of these on the same day spares you a second round of setup.

How a top-up works
Century home attic insulation starts with a longer inspection, because a house past its hundredth birthday hides problems a newer home never has.
Details for older homes
Attic insulation removal clears away fill that is soaked, mouldy, flattened or fouled by mice, squirrels or raccoons, leaving a clean attic ready for sealing and new material.
How old fill is removed
Attic air sealing plugs the small openings where heated room air escapes upward through the ceiling, and it opens every job we take on.
Where the leaks get sealed
Ice dam prevention is most effective from inside the attic, where the goal is a roof deck too cold to melt the snow sitting on it.
How ice dams are stopped
Cathedral ceiling insulation goes into the thin space above an angled ceiling, where there is no open attic floor to work from.
Options for sloped ceilings
Ontario's attic insulation rebate is one stream of Home Renovation Savings, a program Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas run together, and it refunds a share of the bill once an attic reaches R-50 or more.
Rebate routes and amounts
Attic insulation cost comes down to four things: attic floor area, the depth already there, the material chosen and whether old insulation must come out first.
